Get Ready for the October 1, 2021 Deadline

Beginning October 1, 2020, a traditional driver's license will no longer be accepted through airport security. All passengers on domestic flights will be required to present REAL ID-compliant identification or an acceptable alternative at airport security.

What is REAL ID?

The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, set minimum security standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards and prohibits federal agencies, like TSA, from accepting licenses and identification cards from states that do not meet these standards.

A REAL ID-compliant driver's license will have one of the above markings on the upper top portion of the card. If the license does not have one of these markings, it is not REAL ID-compliant and won't be accepted as proof of identity in order to board a commercial aircraft.

How do I get a REAL ID-compliant Driver's License?

Please visit your state DMV in person. Check with your state DMV in advance and gather the required documentation before you arrive. There is no reason to wait for your current license to expire.

What alternatives can I present to airport security if I do not have a REAL ID-compliant Driver's License?

Acceptable alternatives include:

• U.S. Passport or Passport Card
• U.S. Military ID
• DHS Trusted Traveler Card (Global Entry, Nexus, Sentri, Fast)
• Enhanced Driver's License (MI, MN, NY, VT and WA)
